LVMH
TITLE: The Absence of Presence
THEME: "Imprint of the Body", A Tribute to Yves Klein
My submission to the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) Young Creator's Prize:
A brain rests on a plexiglas panel, while a heart and ear are place below.

This is a top view of the piece. As a result of lighting from above,
imprints on plexi appear as shadows on the ground.

This is a view from under the table structure:
Description:
The body is expected and in this piece, that shell is stripped and
the Void exposed. Not only is the Imprint suggested by remnants of the
absent body, but it also serves to surpass the confines of any single
physical dimension. Direct impressions of the body are evident in the form of
hand prints on plexiglas while further inspection reveals the imprints exist
as shadows created by their presence. The shadow of a print; something that
is impossible in reality. In the absence of light remains darkness, a more
literal representation of the Void.
My inspiration for this piece is my sister who is affected by
Down’s Syndrome and her participation in this piece was vital. Her hand
prints function as a demonstration of the strength of a silent imprint.
They possess the capacity to express the limitations imposed upon her
ability to share her life and perform as a physical manifestation of an
individuality often gone unnoticed. The simulated parts are those that
are the most commonly affected by this condition- the brain, heart,
and ears. She essentially references the concept of Yves Klein’s
body of work “le Vide”, the Void, embodying an identity purely void of
worldly influences. Therefore, in tribute to Yves Klein, this piece formally
and conceptually represents the imprint of the story, the existence, the body.
